New Zealand batsman Nathan Astle will miss the upcoming one-day triangular series involving Australia and India with a knee injury.
Nathan Astle
Astle will return to New Zealand following the second Test against India in Mohali. The batsman has an injuty to his left knee that has been bothering him on the tour. It is also his first tour since having knee surgery earlier this year.
Despite the injury concern, the 32-year-old played a leading role in saving the first Test against India this week in Ahmedabad. Astle struck a century in the first innings and then an unbeaten half-century in the second to deny India the win.
Lindsay Crocker, the New Zealand team manager, explained that the extent of the injury is unknown.
"Nathan has had some aggravation in his left knee since early in the tour and he is returning home to have the injury examined by a medical specialist," he told CricInfo.
"It is difficult to ascertain the exact nature, or extent, of the injury.
"There would be a greater risk of aggravation of the injury during the triangular tournament because of the more strenuous fielding demands in one-day cricket."
Chris Nevin has been called up to replace Astle for the limited overs series, which starts on 23 October in Chennai.
While Astle has scored 5540 runs in 174 ODIs, his replacement has accumulated only 700 runs in 32 ODIs.
